A Bit of a Breather

No, I’m not taking a break from my writing. I’m ploughing straight ahead with that.

What I’m talking about is OQ Update Month, which happens to be going on right now.

As most of you must know by now, the Outlaw Queen fandom has pretty much had a theme week almost every month since last July. Despite our ship getting sunk in 2016 and the show ending last year, we are still going strong.

While the theme weeks are great at keeping the fandom alive and have been fun, a lot of us started lamenting about how we’ve neglected our regular fics. I feel like I’m always backburnering mine and that’s one of the many reasons why Comfort Food is always late.

So someone decided that April should be dedicated to us just finishing our unfinished projects. Give us a chance to have a breather and not have to worry about tight deadlines.

It’s been nice to just deal with my stories again and not have to worry about an upcoming theme week. (Though Prompt Party is lurking around the corner). And I’ve already posted two updates so far! I’m readying a couple more, possibly for this week. So this month is really productive for me so far.

Of course, there is a button. After all, I believe I’ve documented how much our fandom loves buttons. To win a button, you have to submit either 5 updates or 20,000 words in the month. I know I’ll be able to make those 5 updates and I want to do it before April 22nd, which is when I’ll be leaving for Milan. Since I won’t be returning until April 29th, that won’t leave much time to update then.

And it also gives me time to focus on The Christmas Wish as well as I do backburner that during crunch time for theme weeks. I’m heading into the climax now and I’m excited. I can see the end. I might have the whole thing changed over by early summer. And then I can move onto the next phase. Publication for Christmas is looking more and more likely!

My Favorite Movie and TV Couples

Let’s really kickoff my month of romance with some of my favorite couples from both the big and small screens.

1. Outlaw Queen (Regina Mills/Robin Hood), Once Upon a Time

the picture

I figured I would get this out of the way because I’m sure by now, some of you are probably tired of hearing about this couple. Robin Hood and the Evil Queen still sounds like a weird combination but in the hands of the Once writers (well, the ones from Season 3) as well as Lana Parrilla and Sean Maguire, it was magic. They were two people who loved and lost and who were both loving parents. Regina was still working on becoming a better person and Robin saw the good in her rather than just the Evil Queen. He believed in her and supported her when she she needed it, giving her romantic love.

2. Lucy Preston/Wyatt Logan, Timeless

lyatt

An intelligent historian meets a jaded soldier and magic happened. Lucy and Wyatt built from coworkers to friends to the hint of something more. By the time they kissed in season 2, I was cheering—and so were other fans. Of course, a wrench got thrown into their relationship in season 2 but it was still clear that they cared about each other. Thankfully, they had a happy ending. (Unlike Outlaw Queen).

3. Belle and the Beast/Prince, Beauty and the Beast

beauty and the beast

Belle is my favorite Disney princess, a bookworm who loves to learn and tries to see the best in everyone. She sacrifices her own freedom to save her father, even if it means living with a beast. In some ways, he’s like Mr. Darcy and she’s like Elizabeth Bennet (with far less sass). Beast starts to change his behavior when Belle stands up to him and finally confronts him on how awful he treats everyone. He starts to care about someone other than him and it makes him more human, which draws her closer to him. Tale as old as time indeed.

4. Newt Scamander/Tina Goldstein, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

newttina

I wasn’t expecting to love them as much as I do. But there was just something about watching the rule-abiding, no-nonsense Tina slowly warm up to the kind-hearted if a big fan of loopholes Newt. They worked well together, balancing each other out—he brought out her more spontaneous side while she grounded him. Things were a bit tense in the second movie but hopefully we’ll see more in the third.

5. Usagi/Sailor Moon and Mamoru/Tuxedo Kamen, Sailor Moon

sailor moon

I think the new version of the anime has done a better job at capturing their relationship than the original (or at least the dub). They are star-crossed lovers who are reborn and find each other again. Mamoru grounds Usagi and she gets him to not be so serious. They are also partners when fighting (once they realize they are on the same side and not foes) and support each other through all the weird things that come with fighting other worldly forces.

Those are just some of my favorite couples from movie and TV. Who are yours? Share below!

The Christmas Engagement

Did you know Hallmark Channel has a Fantasy Football type league made up of its Christmas movies? You choose the movies you think will be the most watched that weekend and then you are awarded points based on where they fall once the ratings come in. I’m playing and it’s kinda fun to weigh my favorites with what I think others favor.

And of course, it’s fun to watch the movies. Are they predictable? Cheesy? Pretty much cookie cutter? Yes. But I still love them. And clearly so do many, many other people. Admit it, you do too.

So is there a point to me talking about Hallmark’s movies? Yes, there is!

In the past couple posts, I’ve mentioned participating in the annual Outlaw Queen Advent calendar but couldn’t really explain what I was working on for it due to the rules. Well, my story went up already so now I feel comfortable sharing what it was about with you!

Getting Back on Track

Update: I was going to post this last week. However, my laptop decided to die on me…again. Turns out it wasn’t the AC adaptor (though I’m sure that was going too). Our IT guy at work did some investigating and found that there is a known battery issue with my particular Dell model. He found a fix and checked out a few things. Hopefully, we don’t have this issue again.

But I appreciate crossed fingers just in case.

In last week’s post, I talked about why I had gone silent for almost a month. I also mentioned that I was working on my Advent story and it was consuming pretty much everything. Well good news—I’m done!

And it’s a relief to say that.

To review: For the past few years, the Outlaw Queen fandom puts out an Advent Calendar in December. Each day unlocks new gifts, which can be fanart, fanfics, fanvids, etc. They are all Outlaw Queen themed and all revolve around Christmas or winter. We enjoy getting these gifts and the team who designs the website each year does amazing work. Even the “404 Error: Page Not Found” page is a gift when it gets found!

I don’t want to give too much away about my story as it is one of the rules. It’s a fake dating AU that I hope everyone enjoys! But as I noted, I did change Robin’s backstory about a week before the story was due and had to scrap 9,000 words, essentially starting over.

Talk about a crunch, huh?

Finding Inspiration

This is going to be a short post. I was focused on getting my Paris posts out the week before last and I did mean this for last week but it never posted. And then I got distracted by the latest theme week and forgot all about it.

So you’re getting a slightly altered version now!

I just finished “Inspired by OQ” Week. The best way to describe the week is how it was first presented to us: “Fic the Art, Art the Fic.” Basically, writers picked an existing piece of Outlaw Queen fanart/manip/fanvid and based a story about it while artists picked a story and made some art for it. People also made moodboards, aesthetics or playlists inspired by fanfics as well. Everyone was really energized during this week and it reminded us just how amazing our fandom truly is.

The Christmas Wish

Look! Another entry about writing! I’m on a streak!

As I wrote in this entry, I’ve been working on turning my 2016 Outlaw Queen Christmas fic The Christmas Wish into an original novel called The Christmas Wish. I figured I would give you all an update!

To recap: The Christmas Wish is a whimsical holiday romance about two single parents who find their lives changed forever when their sons ask Santa to make them brothers.

(I think this is the first story that I could actually sum up in one sentence. I’m impressed with myself).

Lightning Strikes!

I love talking about my writing. This may come as a surprise since I seem to talk about everything BUT that on this blog, but it’s true. And it struck me that I do have a blog about writing, so I should talk about it more. I think I’ve just been hesitant because most of my energy has been on fanfiction rather than original works but writing is writing, right?

Okay, so our story starts last year around this time. One of my followers sent me a prompt on tumblr, asking for a Once Upon a Time AU where Regina and Robin’s daughter broke the curse and then Regina had to deal with everything. I tweaked it a bit and started writing. I had tried to keep it a one-shot but it just ballooned before I realized it was going to be a multichapter story.

The basic plot was that Regina didn’t cast the Dark Curse but Zelena did to ruin her life. So she’s been separated from her husband (Robin) and their daughter, living a lonely life in Storybrooke where she has no friends, no love life and is stuck in a dead end job. All of that changes when a young girl named Diana finds her and claims she is Regina’s daughter. She produces the storybook as proof and as Regina reads, she finds herself believing more and more as well as finding the confidence to change her life.

I didn’t really work on it as often as I should’ve, usually shoving it to the back when I got busy. But I decided to work on it more regularly this year and that’s one of the reasons we got to this point.

Once Upon a Time: A Tribute

As I noted in my Chapter II post, it was announced back in February that Once Upon a Time would be ending with Season 7.

Today is the series finale. It’s officially ending. I don’t know if it’s going to really hit me right away or if it’s still going to be delayed, perhaps until July when there are no new set pictures and there is no Comic Con panel. Or September when there’s no premiere to look forward to. I don’t know but I know it will come.

Of course, I’ll probably cry at random times during the weekend. I did so when they killed Robin and I cried the day after the Season 6 finale because that was its own goodbye to the series as well. All of that tells me that it’s going to be another May of tears over Once Upon a Time and it’ll be even more bittersweet that it’ll be the last one.

So since today is the series finale, I want to pay tribute to this show. Because it changed my life in so many ways and I need to say goodbye to it properly.

How I Celebrated Valentine’s Day

I know I didn’t post something for Valentine’s Day. You’d think with my main focus being on romance, I would’ve marked the holiday dedicated to it. I did…just not on this blog.

Once again, I participated in Love From OQ. What is that, you ask? Well, it probably won’t surprise you to know that it’s part of my participation with the Outlaw Queen fandom. It’s pretty much a Secret Santa but with a Valentine’s Day spin. We all signed up and someone assigned us Valentine’s. We then made contact anonymously to find out what kind of gifts they wanted and then got to work.

I was assigned someone who I actually had in a Secret Santa I participated in and was eager to write again. Though she requested angst and I was a bit wracked on an angsty idea. (I probably would’ve handled a fluffy idea a lot easier). It took me more time than I would’ve liked to figure out an idea and I went through a few before finally figuring one out.

Of course, it was eight days before Valentine’s Day when I managed to do that.

So naturally I was slightly panicked. I had only eight days to write everything and get it up. The heat was on.

What did I do? I pretty much put everything on hold and just focused on that story. And I did some research on my phone while I was at work, looking up lymphoma and its treatments to craft my story. Then I spent my nights just writing and writing, trying to get the story out.

It’s a big story, though, bigger than I anticipated and I’m still trying to get it all out. However, I did manage to get the first 10,000 words up in time for Valentine’s Day, so go me! My goal is to finish it before February is over and I think I can do it.

I just need to focus and write my ass off.

Wish me luck!
