NaNoWriMo 2017 Wrap Up

I know there’s still almost a week left but I’m calling it now: I’m not winning NaNoWriMo this year. And it won’t be a record breaking year either.

I’m okay with that.

This year just wasn’t my year. I never really felt either of my stories. I thought I was excited about both but nothing really ever took off. My second attempt just seems too out of character for Regina and I’m not sure I can salvage it—as a fanfiction. I think it might work as an original story, though.

I’ll have to see.

Not feeling my options were a big reason why I’m not going to win. I know that. I did finish an 11k one shot for this year’s Outlaw Queen Advent Calendar but that didn’t have anything to do with it (except be the reason why I had no writing to add on Friday). I had the same thing last year but still managed to write a lot then—but I really was into my project last year.

Maybe next year will be better. And maybe I’ll return to an original work then. We’ll see.

How was your NaNo?

Starting Over (NaNoWriMo Edition)

Yes, I decided to scrap the project I was working on and start all over on a new one.

I just wasn’t feeling my original project. To be honest, I had been waffling for most of the month so far. And keep in mind, we’re barely ten days in. But I couldn’t come up with a better idea so I decided to power through it.

Then came Tuesday. I was trying to find something to watch and saw that Hallmark Channel was airing A Princess for Christmas. I had seen it a couple days earlier but it was the only good thing, so I watched it again. And a couple days ago, I caught “Crown for Christmas,” another Hallmark Christmas movie.

It hit me hard. I was going to do “Crown for Christmas” but with an Outlaw Queen twist. Robin would be the hotel worker who meets the queen of a small European nation (Regina) and is then recruited to help care for her son—just as a tutor rather than a governess. Or whatever the male version would be.

So I’m doing that now. And it’s definitely going better than my original idea. Always goes to show that sometimes it pays to take risks.

Wish me luck!

NaNoWriMo 2017: It’s Coming!

Holy crap, October is almost over! The end of the year always seems to fly by, doesn’t it? Not the dreary winter months of January, February and March but the fun months—Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas! (Come on, that’s what we really think when we hear October, November and December if you’re American).

It also means that NaNoWriMo is around the corner. Once again, I will be participating. And once again, I will be using it to write my Outlaw Queen Christmas fic.

So, what is it about? Glad you asked!

It’s October, meaning we’re fast approaching November and NaNoWriMo.

I had been debating whether or not I was going to do it. I’m chugging along on my Big Project so I figured I was going to skip this year. But I changed my mind. I am going to participate.

What am I going to write? This time, I’m going to write a fanfic. Surprise, surprise, right?

Here’s a bigger surprise: It’s an Outlaw Queen one!

(Please note the sarcasm)

January 25, 2016

I’m doing it.

I’m keeping one of my anticipations. Well, another one of them.

I’m putting a story up on Wattpad. It’s the one I started writing during this year’s NaNoWriMo, Long Live the Queen. It’s also undergoing some serious rewrites, but I think it’ll do well. Or at least I hope so.

If it does do well, I’ll put up a few more stories. Probably “The Conference House” and “The Wedding Game.” Maybe even “Fairest of Them All.” I’ll play it by ear.

So please look me up. I’m GraceMackenzieNess on there.

Thank you!

Fanfiction, Original Fiction and Me

In my last post, I said I was grateful for the Outlaw Queen fandom from Once Upon a Time. And that I was going to expound on it. So here we go:

I’ve been posting Outlaw Queen fanfiction for over a year now. And it’s been great. Fans love my writing. “All That Was Me” had its own hashtag on Twitter! I never thought I’d have that with my original writing, let along a fanfic. People also adore my Dark!Robin story, “The Prince of Darkness,” which makes me happy. It just started out as a one-shot. And then it grew bigger. Now, I’m planning a sequel as well.

Then there are my non-magical AUs—”Comfort Food,” “The Nanny,” and “Building a Family.” All have good followings, especially “The Nanny.” People clamor for updates. And they are really complimentary.

But I’m not writing this to toot my own horn. (Okay, maybe a little). I have a point beyond that.

It’s November 2nd. We’re two days into NaNoWriMo! How’s everyone doing? I think I’m off to a good start.

I’ve gotten a clearer picture of my plot. Just in time, right? So what is it? Read on:

NaNoWriMo 2015

I can’t believe it. Time certainly does fly, huh? I can’t believe I’m gearing up for NaNoWriMo. I logged back into the website last week to find everything reset for this year. And it was a bit exciting, to get everything ready.

A few weeks ago, I talked about scrapping Savannah’s story for my reincarnated princess series. How she no longer fit with the direction I wanted to take it in. So I was swapping her out with Ellie, a Cinderella story. And I thought that would be my NaNoWriMo project.

Then came the shower and my plans changed. Long time readers of my blog will know that happens quite often.

So what happened?

September 14, 2015

So, last week I talked about my vacation.

But something also happened on my vacation, writing-wise. I got an idea about my fairy tale reincarnation series. Funnily enough, I got while riding the Little Mermaid ride. You know, since it deals with a fairy tale princess. And my series is about reincarnated fairy tale princesses.

So what happened? Well, I decided it would make more sense if everything happened at the Royal Plaza—the hotel Gwen (Snow White) works in. Everyone either works or lives there, to give it a central location. I could even use the Royal Plaza in the series name somehow.

This means rewrites for “Fairest of Them All” and “Dreams of the Rose.” And I’m scrapping “The Best Medicine.” While I like the idea of doing one the more obscure princesses (in this case, the princess who never laughed), it was a bit difficult to write. And I’ve never been too thrilled with it. So she’s getting replaced.

(Sorry, Savannah. I promise I’ll tell your story. Just not right now).

I had planned on writing Kalliope’s story for NaNoWriMo this year but looks like that’s going to change. Instead, I’ll be working on Ellie’s story—she’s Savannah’s replacement. I’m sure you’ve all guessed who Ellie is supposed to be—Cinderella. There will probably be some tweaks (I’m already thinking a stepfather instead of a stepmother) but I’ll see. I have until November.

Which is coming up really fast.

That’s kinda scary.
