The Christmas Engagement

Did you know Hallmark Channel has a Fantasy Football type league made up of its Christmas movies? You choose the movies you think will be the most watched that weekend and then you are awarded points based on where they fall once the ratings come in. I’m playing and it’s kinda fun to weigh my favorites with what I think others favor.

And of course, it’s fun to watch the movies. Are they predictable? Cheesy? Pretty much cookie cutter? Yes. But I still love them. And clearly so do many, many other people. Admit it, you do too.

So is there a point to me talking about Hallmark’s movies? Yes, there is!

In the past couple posts, I’ve mentioned participating in the annual Outlaw Queen Advent calendar but couldn’t really explain what I was working on for it due to the rules. Well, my story went up already so now I feel comfortable sharing what it was about with you!

Getting Back on Track

Update: I was going to post this last week. However, my laptop decided to die on me…again. Turns out it wasn’t the AC adaptor (though I’m sure that was going too). Our IT guy at work did some investigating and found that there is a known battery issue with my particular Dell model. He found a fix and checked out a few things. Hopefully, we don’t have this issue again.

But I appreciate crossed fingers just in case.

In last week’s post, I talked about why I had gone silent for almost a month. I also mentioned that I was working on my Advent story and it was consuming pretty much everything. Well good news—I’m done!

And it’s a relief to say that.

To review: For the past few years, the Outlaw Queen fandom puts out an Advent Calendar in December. Each day unlocks new gifts, which can be fanart, fanfics, fanvids, etc. They are all Outlaw Queen themed and all revolve around Christmas or winter. We enjoy getting these gifts and the team who designs the website each year does amazing work. Even the “404 Error: Page Not Found” page is a gift when it gets found!

I don’t want to give too much away about my story as it is one of the rules. It’s a fake dating AU that I hope everyone enjoys! But as I noted, I did change Robin’s backstory about a week before the story was due and had to scrap 9,000 words, essentially starting over.

Talk about a crunch, huh?

Finding Inspiration

This is going to be a short post. I was focused on getting my Paris posts out the week before last and I did mean this for last week but it never posted. And then I got distracted by the latest theme week and forgot all about it.

So you’re getting a slightly altered version now!

I just finished “Inspired by OQ” Week. The best way to describe the week is how it was first presented to us: “Fic the Art, Art the Fic.” Basically, writers picked an existing piece of Outlaw Queen fanart/manip/fanvid and based a story about it while artists picked a story and made some art for it. People also made moodboards, aesthetics or playlists inspired by fanfics as well. Everyone was really energized during this week and it reminded us just how amazing our fandom truly is.

Lightning Strikes!

I love talking about my writing. This may come as a surprise since I seem to talk about everything BUT that on this blog, but it’s true. And it struck me that I do have a blog about writing, so I should talk about it more. I think I’ve just been hesitant because most of my energy has been on fanfiction rather than original works but writing is writing, right?

Okay, so our story starts last year around this time. One of my followers sent me a prompt on tumblr, asking for a Once Upon a Time AU where Regina and Robin’s daughter broke the curse and then Regina had to deal with everything. I tweaked it a bit and started writing. I had tried to keep it a one-shot but it just ballooned before I realized it was going to be a multichapter story.

The basic plot was that Regina didn’t cast the Dark Curse but Zelena did to ruin her life. So she’s been separated from her husband (Robin) and their daughter, living a lonely life in Storybrooke where she has no friends, no love life and is stuck in a dead end job. All of that changes when a young girl named Diana finds her and claims she is Regina’s daughter. She produces the storybook as proof and as Regina reads, she finds herself believing more and more as well as finding the confidence to change her life.

I didn’t really work on it as often as I should’ve, usually shoving it to the back when I got busy. But I decided to work on it more regularly this year and that’s one of the reasons we got to this point.

Become My Patron?

I live!

I know it’s been a few weeks but it seemed like I never had enough time to sit down and write a blog post. Especially as I tried to get all my blog posts about Paris done. (I’m still working on them and they’ll all come out in the same week).

For now, though, I thought we would go back to what I want this blog to focus on—my writing!

As I mentioned earlier this year, I’ve decided to turn one of my fanfics into a published original novel—The Christmas Wish. It’s a whimsical holiday romance about two single parents who find their lives turned upside down when their sons ask Santa to make them brothers for Christmas. As they navigate the changes in their lives, both come to have a better understanding of love, family and the magic of Christmas.

Confessions of a Fandom “Old”

I have been fangirling for a long time, probably since childhood though I didn’t realize it. However, I mark my official start in the world of fandom at the age of 13 when my friend Eowyn (yes, her real name) introduced me to fanfiction and fan art for our favorite animes—Sailor Moon, Ronin Warriors and Gundam Wing.

So, yes, I’ve been participating in fandom for almost two decades. I’ve bounced around different fandoms, from the three I mentioned above to Harry Potter to Lord of the Rings to, of course, Once Upon a Time (specifically Outlaw Queen).

I’ve come to grips that I am now a fandom old. That I’ve been around fandom so long, I’ve kinda seen it all and am not very surprised when shenanigans happen. It just seems to be the same song, different fandom.

Yet sometimes, I can still be surprised and shocked at how low a fandom can sink. As much as I love the Once Upon a Time fandom and know it is filled with amazing, beautiful and kind people, there still can be a very ugly side to the fandom as well. And I know it’s not unique in the changing world of fandom.

Oops, I Did It Again

I know with how off topic I’ve been lately, you might be worried that this is an ode to Britney Spears’ hit song from the late 90s. Don’t worry, it’s not.

No, no, I have another reason to invoke her song title. Because I have done something again.

I put The Christmas Wish on the backburner and so technically stalled it. Again.

deep sigh

Once again, it’s because of my other fanfiction. I’m still trying to wrap up my Valentine’s Day story (it’s coming. I can feel it nearing the end) but I’m also about to head into the prompt party. So that’s going to take a lot of my time because there’s another button on the line.

I want that button.

Sorry. These buttons are serious business in our fandom.

How I Celebrated Valentine’s Day

I know I didn’t post something for Valentine’s Day. You’d think with my main focus being on romance, I would’ve marked the holiday dedicated to it. I did…just not on this blog.

Once again, I participated in Love From OQ. What is that, you ask? Well, it probably won’t surprise you to know that it’s part of my participation with the Outlaw Queen fandom. It’s pretty much a Secret Santa but with a Valentine’s Day spin. We all signed up and someone assigned us Valentine’s. We then made contact anonymously to find out what kind of gifts they wanted and then got to work.

I was assigned someone who I actually had in a Secret Santa I participated in and was eager to write again. Though she requested angst and I was a bit wracked on an angsty idea. (I probably would’ve handled a fluffy idea a lot easier). It took me more time than I would’ve liked to figure out an idea and I went through a few before finally figuring one out.

Of course, it was eight days before Valentine’s Day when I managed to do that.

So naturally I was slightly panicked. I had only eight days to write everything and get it up. The heat was on.

What did I do? I pretty much put everything on hold and just focused on that story. And I did some research on my phone while I was at work, looking up lymphoma and its treatments to craft my story. Then I spent my nights just writing and writing, trying to get the story out.

It’s a big story, though, bigger than I anticipated and I’m still trying to get it all out. However, I did manage to get the first 10,000 words up in time for Valentine’s Day, so go me! My goal is to finish it before February is over and I think I can do it.

I just need to focus and write my ass off.

Wish me luck!

2018: Chapter 1

Have you ever seen those inspirational pictures where they refer to the days as pages and the year as a book of your life? Well, I have. It made me think—if each day is a page, that means each month would be a chapter. So I’ve decided to do a round up of each “chapter” of my 2018.

Let’s check out how January or “Chapter 1” went for me!

It started out pretty well though very, very cold as most of the country was gripped by a cold front. My aunt and I flew home from Virginia and I prepared to head back to work for the New Year. The first work week of January, though, was shorter than usual since a snow storm blew in on Thursday and my office was closed both that day and Friday.

A few days after that, my parents flew down to Florida to go to Walt Disney World (without me) and I had the house to myself. Unfortunately, I threw off my sleep schedule, using falling asleep for a few hours when I got home and then being up for most of the night. I managed to right myself that weekend though.
