Leap Year

Filed under: off topic — mackenziew @ 12:00 am

It’s February 29th. It’s been four years since we last saw this date. So if today’s your birthday—happy birthday!

We all know why we have a leap year: to adjust to the fact that the Earth’s orbit around the sun does change every revolution it makes. So we get an extra day.

Let’s be honest—this is just another day for most of us. But there are a few who look forward to it. (And not just the birthday boys and girls). There are a few romantic traditions associated with this day.

Have you ever heard of a Sadie Hawkins’ dance? Ever gone to one? I haven’t but I’ve heard of them. Though I guess my junior prom could’ve counted as one. A Sadie Hawkins’ dance is where the girls invite the boys. I went to an all-girls high school, so we had no choice but to invite the boys to prom. Anyway, Sadie Hawkins’ dances are traditionally held on February 29th.

There is also an Irish tradition that says a woman can ask a man to marry her on February 29th. A movie was made about it (the okayish “Leap Year” with Amy Adams). Tired of him dragging his feet? Ask him yourself! Though do you really want to if he’s such a commitment phobe?

So let’s be daring today. Do something you normally wouldn’t do. This day only happens once every four years.

Shake things up.
