Countdown to the Holidays

It happens every year at the stroke of midnight, when October 31st becomes November 1st. When kids have been knocked out after their sugar high and their parents sneak some their candy. When costumed adults are still drinking and reveling.

It’s the moment when Halloween ends and Christmas begins. Where Christmas songs begin immediately on the radio and Christmas movies abound on the TV. Commercials start popping up with snow, bells and decorations.

Christmas is everywhere. There’s no escaping it. Give in to the holly and the jolly.

It does get overwhelming, though. We all feel it. It can be easy to burn out before December. I’m trying not to do so this year. I want to enjoy this Christmas.

Movies and specials. I love Hallmark’s Christmas movies. I don’t care how cheesy some of them can get. They are a delight and can put me in a Christmas-y mood. I can watch them for hours.

And there are the other movies and specials. How the Grinch Stole Christmas. A Christmas Carol. Love Actually. A Charlie Brown Christmas. And so many more…

Songs. Who doesn’t love Christmas songs? Okay, I’m sure there are a few people out there. I’m not one of them, as evidenced by this post from last year. They always put me in a Christmas-y mood, though I always take care not to overload myself too soon.

Decorations. There aren’t many up—except  a few blow up turkeys here or there. I work near a major city center, so that’s all done up for the holidays already. Wreathes are hung on lampposts as are snowflake lights. Garland decorations fly high over the streets. More will come soon, but for now, this is a nice taste of what’s to come.

Weather. Yes, the weather is very important to helping create the holiday mood. For example, last week I was driving around listening to Christmas music while decorations went up around me. It was 70 degrees outside. Kinda kills the mood, huh?

But it’s gotten colder. It’s feeling like the holiday season—Jack Frost is definitely nipping at the nose. And poor Buffalo is buried under snow already. I’m hoping for a white Christmas. Just not a white out Christmas.

Are you in a holiday mood?
