The Things You Learn

One of the good things about writing historical fiction is that you are always learning knew things. Even when you think you know everything, something surprises you.

Happened to me recently. I was doing some research for “The Conference House,” for my current chapter. Two of my characters go to visit the Rose and Crown Tavern, where William Howe stayed while camped on Staten Island. So I wanted to get a reference in how to describe it. I googled it and did find a drawing of the Rose and Crown.

I also found it was located at New Dorp and Richmond Road. My eye doctor is near there. I’ve probably passed by where it stood many times and didn’t know. What other places used to exist by locations I’ve seen my whole life? I hope to learn more!

What about you? Are there any places you’ve past which once upon a time were something else? Did anything important happen there?

Find out!
