Once Upon a Time…

And no, I’m not talking about the TV show. Though that is amazing and I suggest you go watch it.

So what do I mean? Well, I thought I would go back to my NaNoWriMo project for this post. Remember—“Fairest of Them All”? It’s the story of the woman who believes she’s the reincarnation of Snow White. And it’s the first in a series. Gwen—my main character—has four best friends who may be reincarnated fairy tale princesses as well. I leave hints as to who Rosalie, Kalliope, Anne and Savannah are in Gwen’s story. There is also the possibility to bring in more princesses or fairy tale characters if I so chose.

(Ooh, brain storm for one. But where was I?)

Why do we still gravitate to fairy tale characters? I’m not the first to use them. Disney’s built an empire on them. And I guess we gravitate toward them because they’re archetypes. We can build on them. Snow White and Cinderella are two women who are good and kind. They are walked over by the people in their lives. But then they are rewarded and get to live happily ever after. And those who walked over them get their comeuppance. Don’t we want to see the people who’ve wronged us pay? And have our dreams come true in the process?

There is also so much we can do with these fairy tales. We’ve heard of fractured fairy tales. And there are modern versions. I’m telling one. But because I have Gwen dreaming of her life as Snow White, I can retell the story. Explore a few things. Like how Snow felt after the attempts on her life. Or if she knew if her stepmother was a witch (I assume she didn’t).

And I look forward to doing that with the other stories. I hope my future readers do as well.

So, readers, I ask you: What is your favorite fairy tale?
