Writing in the Holidays

Last year, it snowed a few days before Halloween. And I lamented the fact “The Wedding Game” took place in the summer. Because I wanted to write a winter/Christmas scene. Perhaps that’s why I decided to set “The Fairest of Them All” in November and December, culminating at a “Holiday Ball.”

Why do people like to write about Christmas? It must be something in the air. The crispness, perhaps? The lights? The music? The sugar rush? Seriously, I think we’re all depressed in January not due to lack of sunlight but because we’re crashing from the cookies, chocolate, and candy canes of December.

Perhaps it’s the themes of Christmas, straight from the Bible. “Peace on earth and goodwill to men.” Love and joy. Family and friends. Second chances. Things writers love to write about. So Christmas does feature in stories a lot.

Especially romances. It must be the dark and cold. Perfect settings for cuddling, kissing and more.

So who wouldn’t write at Christmas? Though it may prevent some Christmas shopping.

Which reminds me, how many days do I have left? Fifteen? Dang, I better get shopping!
