*Once again, I’m writing this in advance. I hope to be in revision mode by the time this goes up. If I’m not, I’m going to be mad.

So, I’m working on revising “The Wedding Game.” Most of it is rewrites. How do I do it? Glad you asked! (Just play along).

After I finished the first draft, I went back to Chapter 1. It’s been several months since I last looked at it. I suggest doing so for everything you edit. The best thing to do is to give yourself space between when you write something and when you edit. You need to go back to it with fresh eyes. Time away gives you perspective.

So I separate Chapter 1 from the rest of the story. I then reread it line by line. In journalism, we call it a line edit. And I find it works as it forces you to focus on every word. Is it necessary? Is there a better word? More needed? Less needed? Delete the sentence entirely? Add more?

A lot of questions, right? Your head is probably spinning. Just imagine what mine is doing! But right now, it is a lot of rewriting. I’ve had ideas about it for some time now. Heightening the tension within the love triangle. Graying up the uncle’s character. Deleting a cousin. Upgrading Fr. Andrew’s character.

Wish me luck.

ETA (8/6/2012 @ 12:41 AM): I finished “The Wedding Game” just as this post went live. So I will be going into revision mode within a week.
