A Writer's Journey

Writing, Writing, Writing

I’ve dealt with my preferred medium. Now comes how exactly I like to do my writing.

There are writers who prefer to write their final chapter before everything else. I remember watching a documentary on the phenomenon that is Harry Potter. They interviewed J.K. Rowling before she finished the seventh book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. She revealed that she had written the final chapter—that epilogue that divides the fan base—all ready. She said she would check it constantly to remind herself who she wanted to remain alive and what she had planned for them.

That isn’t how I prefer to write. I often say that I start at Point “A” with Point “Z” on the horizon, but not clearly in sight. I like to see what points “B” through “Y” are courtesy of the characters. I like to write character driven pieces and let them take me on their journey. Of course, there are some characters who demand their own journeys, but that’s another blog post for another day.

So, I prefer to write linearly. I follow from beginning to end. There has only been one time I have written the last chapter early. It was for a fan fiction I was writing and I had gotten the idea for the ending. Since it is technically a parody, the ending was pretty much set from the very beginning. Is that ending set in stone? Of course not. It could change as the characters progress.

Right now, I’m writing chapter 4 of my novel. At least, it stands as chapter four for now. Depending on the length, it could end up joining chapter 3. However, I already got the idea for chapter 5 and so started writing that in my notebook. I know how I am going to introduce my female protagonist and cannot wait to get to that.

All in all, exciting developments!
