Pen Mightier than the Keyboard?

We all know that the pen is mightier than the sword. However, technology has given writers a new tool—the computer.

The question is what medium to authors prefer to use? Some still prefer to use pen and paper. Some prefer to use their computer and/or laptop. Heck, I’m sure there are still authors out there who prefer to use a typewriter! (I know I used to love to play with the one my mother had when I was a child).

So, which do I prefer?

I prefer both the computer and the pen. I’ve written that I keep a notebook by my bed in case I get any inspiration while I’m trying to fall asleep. And I like writing in that notebook. I like the feel of the page as it gets filled with pen ink. I also think it’s interesting to look at an author’s sheets and see the cross outs, the notes and the original ideas.

However, we do live in a technological world. And the written word ends up on a computer screen. Most magazines prefer electronic submissions rather than hard copies. There are even websites that provide a way to submit stories or poems to magazines. It also helps the writer track where s/he has submitted. Many magazines allow for simultaneous submissions—accepting a story one may have submitted to other magazines. These sites make it easy to withdraw these stories if they are accepted elsewhere. There is one that will even withdraw your story if any magazine using their service accepts the story.

And so I primarily use a computer to do my writing. I’ve known the agony of staring at that blinking black bar, waiting for you to type something when you have nothing. And I’ve known the experience of my fingers flying over the keys, words filling the page. I do enjoy the copy and paste feature. If I write a sentence but feel it should come earlier or later, I can just move it. I can also go back and add more to paragraphs or insert new paragraphs. You can’t really do that with a notebook and a pen. Trust me, I’ve realized that.

Also, I really like the sound of typing keys. I consider it one of my top sounds of inspiration.

In short: the keyboard is mightier for this writer.
